Canada Green Buildings Strategy

To address the twin challenges of energy affordability and climate change, the government will launch a Canada Green Buildings Strategy. The strategy will help lower home energy bills and reduce building emissions by supporting energy efficient retrofits. This represents an important next step in meeting Canada’s climate targets and helping Canadians save money on their energy bills.Canada Green Buildings Strategy

Budget 2024 proposes to provide $903.5 million over six years, starting in 2024-25, to Natural Resources Canada as follows:
$800 million over five years, starting in 2025-26, to launch a new Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program that will support the direct installation of energy efficiency retrofits for Canadian households with low- to median-incomes.

This program represents the next phase of the Canada Greener Homes Initiative and will be co-delivered with provincial and territorial partners. It will also be complemented by CMHC’s Greener Homes Loan program, which provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 for energy efficiency home retrofits.

$73.5 million over five years, starting in 2024-25, to renew and modernize existing energy efficiency programs that offer tools to building owners like the ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard and the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. This funding will also spur the development of better, more ambitious building codes to further reduce emissions and lower energy bills. The federal government will encourage provinces and territories to adopt these top-tier building codes.

$30 million over five years, starting in 2024-25, to continue developing a national approach to home energy labelling, which will empower prospective home buyers with information about the energy efficiency of their new home, with the support of energy auditors.

Natural Resources Canada will announce further details on the Canada Green Buildings Strategy in the coming weeks.

HER2024 Rebate Program

The program will run until December 2025. Now the anticipation is that the program will end sooner than this as there are only a certain number of rebates that are allowed to be handed out.

  1. For a customer to enroll in this the only thing that has to be done is you, as the advisor enroll them with an auditor.  Energuy has the app to be able to schedule your customer right away.

  2. The audit as listed below will be $500+HST for the pre-retrofit energy assessment and $400+HST for the post-retrofit energy assessment.  The homeowner will be able to get back $600 for this assessment.

  3. The maximum amount for the rebate is $5,000 for everything, including the assessment.

  4. To qualify for the rebate the homeowner must do two upgrades, this could be anything from: Heat Pumps, Heat Pump Water Heaters, Air Sealing, Windows and Doors, Exterior Wall Insolation, Attic Insulation, Flat Roof insolation, Basement wall insolation.

  5. The homeowner can go into the program more than once. For example, if the homeowner does a heat pump and a heat pump water heater and decided to do windows and doors with insolation they can.  However, they won’t get a rebate for a new audit, and they can’t piggyback off an audit that was already completed. For this example, if the first round the homeowner got $3,000 back in rebates, the most they would get for the second time is $2,000 no matter what.

  6. In the winter if we have a no heat situation. There are no exceptions, we cannot do the install before the audit is done.  Now with that being said. Energuy has told me in that situation, we would install the furnace and then the Heat Pump after the Pre-Retrofit Energy Assessment is complete.

  7. Use the Eligible product list from before, it is still valid.

  8. For Ductless – You don’t need a head on every floor, like the previous rebate program.  So, if you have a customer that wants a one headed ductless for their hot office, as long as the ductless on the list is being used, it qualifies.

  9. The rebates are based on tonnage see below.
